Goethe B1 Übungen: free online practice for all four modules

Goethe B1 Übungen are practice exercises for all four exam modules: Lesen (reading, 65 min, 5 Teile), Hören (listening, 40 min, 4 Teile), Schreiben (writing, 60 min, 3 Aufgaben), and Sprechen (speaking, ~15 min, 3 Aufgaben). Each module is worth 100 points, a minimum of 60 in every module is required to pass.

This page maps out what to practise in each module, where to find the best free Übungen online, and how to build a simple weekly routine that covers all four parts without burning out. Every section links to the free interactive practice tool, where questions match the Goethe B1 exam format and Lösungen appear the moment each Aufgabe is answered.

What are Goethe B1 Übungen?

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is a German language certificate recognised worldwide for work, study, and immigration. To earn it, candidates must demonstrate B1-level competence across four separate modules. Goethe B1 Übungen are exercises designed around the specific task formats (Aufgabenformate) that appear in those modules, not generic German grammar drills, but format-specific practice that trains the right skills in the right time constraints.

The table below shows the structure of each module. Passing all four is mandatory, a strong score in one does not compensate for failing another.

Module Duration Teile / Aufgaben Points Pass mark
Lesen 65 min 5 Teile 100 60 / 100
Hören 40 min 4 Teile 100 60 / 100
Schreiben 60 min 3 Aufgaben 100 60 / 100
Sprechen ~15 min 3 Aufgaben 100 60 / 100

Most learners coming from A2 need 3 to 6 months of consistent preparation, roughly 30 to 60 minutes of daily practice across all four modules. The biggest time-saver is practising with realistic Übungen from the very first session, so the exam formats feel automatic by the time the real test arrives.

Übungen per module

Each module has its own task formats. The Übungen that matter most are different for each one.

Lesen

Lesen Übungen, 65 minutes, 5 Teile

reading · 100 pts

The Lesen section has five fixed task types, the texts change each sitting, but the formats never do. That makes Lesen the most trainable part of the exam: learn the five patterns once and the section becomes predictable.

  • Teil 1, Globales Lesen: match short texts to headlines. Practise skimming, read headlines first, then scan for the main idea.
  • Teil 2, Detailverstehen: one longer article with multiple-choice questions. Practise reading the questions before the text, then finding each answer in order.
  • Teil 3, Selektives Lesen: match statements to short texts (often ads or listings). Practise scanning for specific details, price, time, location, and noticing when no text fits.
  • Teil 4, Richtig / Falsch / Nicht im Text: mark statements against a notice or opinion text. Practise the "nicht im Text" option, if it is not explicitly stated, it is not richtig.
  • Teil 5, Sprachbausteine: a cloze text; choose the missing word for each gap. Practise with the B1 Wortliste, the same vocabulary recurs across sittings.

Hören

Hören Übungen, 40 minutes, 4 Teile

listening · 100 pts

The Hören section plays each audio track once or twice depending on the Teil. There is no rewinding, so the key skill is directed listening: knowing what to listen for before the track starts.

  • Teil 1, Kurze Hörtexte: five short everyday recordings (announcements, voicemails); richtig/falsch plus multiple-choice. Heard once, read each statement before the track plays.
  • Teil 2, Ein Vortrag: one longer monologue, e.g. a guided talk or presentation; multiple-choice. Heard once. Anticipate the topic from the question stem, then listen for the exact detail.
  • Teil 3, Ein Gespräch: one informal everyday conversation; richtig/falsch per statement. Heard once, the challenge is keeping pace with two speakers.
  • Teil 4, Eine Diskussion / ein Interview: a radio discussion or interview with several speakers giving opinions; match statements. Heard twice, first listen for the gist, second to confirm.

Best Hören Übungen: active listening with the transcript after, pause after each wrong answer, find the exact phrase, and understand why the distractor sounded plausible. Full Hören guide (all 4 Teile) →

Schreiben

Schreiben Übungen, 60 minutes, 3 Aufgaben

writing · 100 pts

Schreiben has three distinct tasks graded on content, vocabulary, grammar, and structure. Practising under the 60-minute clock matters, budget your time so you address every bullet point on all three Aufgaben.

  • Aufgabe 1, Informal email to a friend (~80 words): reply to a private message covering three given bullet points (Leitpunkte). Use the informal "du". Worth ~40 points.
  • Aufgabe 2, Forum post / opinion (~80 words): give and justify your opinion on an everyday topic in an online comment. Use connectors (deshalb, obwohl, trotzdem) to link arguments. Worth ~40 points.
  • Aufgabe 3, Semi-formal email or note (~40 words): a short message to a teacher, colleague or landlord (apologise, cancel, request). Use the formal "Sie". Worth ~20 points.
✏️

Best Schreiben Übungen: write a timed response, then compare it to a model answer and check every bullet point in the Aufgabe was addressed. Full Schreiben guide (all 3 Aufgaben) →

Sprechen

Sprechen Übungen, ~15 minutes, 3 Aufgaben

speaking · 100 pts

Sprechen is the only face-to-face module, taken with a partner candidate in front of one or two examiners. The three tasks are short but distinct, and knowing the format in advance removes most of the nerves.

  • Aufgabe 1, Gemeinsam etwas planen: plan something together with your partner (e.g. a class trip). The examiners want to hear negotiation: making suggestions, agreeing, disagreeing politely.
  • Aufgabe 2, Ein Thema präsentieren: a short presentation on a given everyday topic (2–3 minutes). Structure: introduce the topic → give two or three points → conclude with your opinion.
  • Aufgabe 3, Auf eine Präsentation reagieren: ask a question or comment on your partner's presentation. One or two well-formed sentences is enough.
🗣️

Best Sprechen Übungen: record yourself on each Aufgabe format, then listen back for filler words, incomplete sentences, and missing connectors. Practise the planning task with a language partner to get used to the interaction format. Full Sprechen guide (all 3 Teile) →

Free interactive practice with instant feedback: vs. static worksheets

Most Goethe B1 Übungen available online are PDF Modellsätze from the Goethe-Institut or third-party worksheets. They are useful, but they have a limitation: you do the exercise, flip to the answer key at the back, and hope you understand why an answer was wrong. There is no immediate loop.

GoethéB1 is built differently. Every question delivers instant Lösungen, the moment an answer is submitted, the correct option is highlighted and a brief explanation appears. This means:

  • Wrong answers are understood while the question is fresh, not minutes later.
  • Time spent on the answer key is zero, the feedback is embedded in the question.
  • The format matches the Goethe B1 exam screen-by-screen, so there is no adjustment on exam day.

The free Goethe B1 Modelltest on GoethéB1 covers all four modules in exam format. The Lesen section has all 5 Teile interactive. The Wortliste covers the B1 vocabulary that recurs in Lesen Teil 5 and Schreiben. Everything is free, no account, no credit card.

Try one: a Schreiben vocabulary question, right here

This is the kind of vocabulary question that appears in Lesen Teil 5 (Sprachbausteine). Choose the word that fits the gap. Feedback appears immediately, same as in the free Modelltest.

Welches Wort passt in die Lücke?

„Ich habe mich für den Kurs angemeldet, ________ ich mehr über das Thema lernen möchte."

A simple weekly practice routine

With 30 to 60 minutes per day, a four-week rotation keeps all modules warm without feeling overwhelming. The logic: Lesen and Hören are high-repetition (formats need to feel automatic), while Schreiben and Sprechen need deliberate production time.

Day Focus What to do (30–60 min)
Mon Lesen One timed Lesen Modelltest (65 min) or two Teile with review
Tue Hören One full Hören session; re-listen to each wrong answer with transcript
Wed Schreiben Write one Aufgabe 1 (25 min) and one Aufgabe 2 (15 min), timed
Thu Wortliste + Lesen 20 min Wortliste flashcards, then one Lesen Teil 5 (Sprachbausteine)
Fri Sprechen Record one Aufgabe 1 planning task and one Aufgabe 2 presentation; review
Sat Full Modelltest Complete Modelltest under timed conditions across all four modules
Sun Review + rest Go through Saturday's errors; update a personal vocabulary list; rest

Adjust the schedule to your weakest module, if Hören is the bottleneck, swap Thursday's Lesen slot for a second Hören session. The exam overview page has more detail on scoring and how retakes work if one module is failed.

Goethe B1 Übungen: quick questions

What are Goethe B1 Übungen?

Goethe B1 Übungen are practice exercises for the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam: Lesen (reading, 65 min, 5 Teile), Hören (listening, 40 min, 4 Teile), Schreiben (writing, 60 min, 3 Aufgaben), and Sprechen (speaking, ~15 min, 3 Aufgaben). Each module is worth 100 points; you need at least 60 in every module to pass.

How many modules does the Goethe B1 exam have?

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 has four modules: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen. Each is worth 100 points and has its own pass mark of 60 out of 100, a strong score in one module cannot compensate for a fail in another. If one module is failed, candidates can usually resit that module alone. Check with your local Goethe-Institut for their specific resit rules.

How long does it take to prepare for the Goethe B1 from A2?

Most learners need 3 to 6 months of consistent study to bridge A2 to B1 level. Thirty to sixty minutes of daily practice across all four modules is more effective than occasional marathon sessions. Using format-specific Übungen from the start shortens the preparation time because candidates are training the exact skills the exam tests, not generic grammar.

Where can I find free Goethe B1 Übungen online?

GoethéB1 provides free interactive Übungen for all four modules with instant Lösungen, no PDF, no registration, no credit card. The full Modelltest covers all four modules in exam format; the Lesen section has all 5 Teile interactive; and the Wortliste covers the B1 vocabulary that recurs in Lesen Teil 5 and Schreiben. Do I have to pass all four modules to get the Goethe B1 certificate?

Yes. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 requires a minimum of 60 out of 100 points in each of the four modules, Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen, independently. A high score in Lesen does not offset a low score in Hören. If one module is failed, candidates can usually resit just that module rather than the entire exam. For official registration, dates, and resit rules, see goethe.de or the exam overview page.
