Goethe B1 Modelltest: free practice with instant Lösungen

A Goethe B1 Modelltest is a full-length practice exam that mirrors the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 structure: four modules, Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen, each worth 100 points. Every module must reach at least 60 out of 100 to pass; a strong score in one module cannot compensate for a weak score in another.

The Goethe-Institut publishes official Modellsätze as PDF downloads, but a static PDF forces candidates to flip to a separate answer key after each section, by then the reasoning is cold. GoethéB1's interactive Modelltest shows Lösungen immediately after every question, across all four modules, free. No PDF, no download, no registration required.

What is a Goethe B1 Modelltest?

A Modelltest (also called a Modellsatz) is an official-format practice exam released by Goethe-Institut to show candidates exactly what the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam looks like, the task types, instructions, timing, and scoring. It is not a past paper; it is a constructed model that demonstrates the format without revealing actual exam content.

Every Modelltest follows the same fixed structure: four modules, each scored independently out of 100. To receive the Goethe-Zertifikat B1, a candidate must pass all four modules in the same exam sitting. Failing even one requires retaking the whole exam.

Practising with a Modelltest does two things simultaneously: it trains the specific task formats, which never change between exam versions, and it calibrates timing. Most candidates who fail Lesen or Hören run out of time, not knowledge. A timed Modelltest exposes that gap early.

The four modules in Modelltest format

The table below shows each module, its duration, number of parts (Teile), maximum points, and what a pass requires. All timing is fixed; there is no borrowing time between modules.

Module Time Teile Max points Pass mark
Lesen 65 min 5 parts 100 60 / 100
Hören 40 min 4 parts 100 60 / 100
Schreiben 60 min 3 parts 100 60 / 100
Sprechen ~15 min 3 parts 100 60 / 100

Lesen is the longest written module at 65 minutes. It has five Aufgaben: globales Lesen (matching texts to headlines), Detailverstehen (multiple-choice on a longer article), selektives Lesen (matching statements to short texts), a Richtig/Falsch/Nicht-im-Text notice text, and Sprachbausteine (a cloze). See the full Lesen guide for part-by-part strategy.

Hören runs 40 minutes and covers four listening task types, global comprehension, detail comprehension, selective listening from radio-style recordings, and a phone message with Richtig/Falsch items. Audio plays twice for most tasks.

Schreiben gives candidates 60 minutes to complete two writing tasks: a structured piece (notice, letter, or forum post) and a personal message. Both tasks are scored for content, communicative intent, and language accuracy.

Sprechen is conducted in pairs or small groups and lasts roughly 15 minutes. It has three parts: a self-introduction, planning a shared activity with a partner, and giving a short presentation with follow-up questions. Sprechen is administered separately from the written modules.

Sprechen in the Modelltest: the interactive Modelltest on GoethéB1 covers Lesen, Hören, and Schreiben fully. Sprechen preparation is better done with a speaking partner or tutor, the exam overview page has resources for that.

Why an interactive Modelltest beats a PDF

The Goethe-Institut PDF Modellsätze are valuable, they show the real format and level. But a PDF has a structural limitation: the Lösungen (answer key) are at the back or in a separate file. This means candidates check their answers after completing an entire section, not question by question.

PDF Modelltest

  • Lösung appears after the whole section
  • Reason for wrong answer unclear in hindsight
  • Printed or zoomed; awkward on mobile
  • No per-question feedback loop
  • Requires printing or PDF reader

GoethéB1 interactive Modelltest

  • Instant Lösung after every question
  • Explanation shown while decision is fresh
  • Works on any device, no download
  • Tracks which question types you miss most
  • Free, no registration, no credit card

The critical difference is the feedback loop. When a Lösung appears immediately after a question, a candidate can read exactly why option B was right and option A was a decoy, and that reasoning sticks. Reviewing a full section's answers 40 minutes later is far less effective for retention.

Research on deliberate practice consistently shows that tight feedback loops accelerate skill acquisition. In an exam context this means: answer a Lesen question, see the Lösung, understand the mistake, move to the next question. Repeat daily for two weeks before the exam.

For more Lesen-specific practice, the Lesen guide covers all five Teile and the most common traps. For vocabulary that appears across the Lesen and Schreiben modules, the Wortliste is the fastest reference. For an overview of all available exercises, see Übungen.

"Modelltest mit Lösung PDF": the online version covers the same content

Searching for B1 Prüfung Modelltest mit Lösung PDF Goethe is a common starting point for exam preparation. The intention is sound: practice with a full exam and check answers. The PDF route delivers exactly that, but requires downloading, printing (or annotating digitally), and cross-referencing a separate answer key.

GoethéB1's interactive Modelltest covers the same content, all four Goethe B1 module formats, at the same level, with Lösungen, and removes the friction. The questions follow the same structure as the official Modellsatz, and the Lösung for each question includes a plain-language explanation of why the correct answer is correct and why the distractors are wrong.

For candidates who want the official PDF as well, the Goethe-Institut publishes free Modellsätze at goethe.de. Using both, the PDF for a timed full-run, the interactive Modelltest for question-level review, is a practical combination.

Goethe B1 Modelltest: FAQ

What is a Goethe B1 Modelltest?

A Goethe B1 Modelltest is an official-format practice exam published by Goethe-Institut (or a platform mirroring that format) that shows candidates exactly what the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 looks like. It covers all four modules, Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen, at the same level and in the same task format as the live exam. Practising with a Modelltest trains both the task formats and the timing before exam day.

How long is the Goethe B1 Modelltest?

The written modules total approximately 2 hours 45 minutes:

  • Lesen: 65 minutes, 5 Teile
  • Hören: 40 minutes, 4 Teile
  • Schreiben: 60 minutes, 3 Teile
  • Sprechen: ~15 minutes per candidate, 3 Teile (separate session)

All timing is fixed. Practising within the time limits is as important as practising the content, running out of time is the most common avoidable reason for failing Lesen.

Where can I find a free Goethe B1 Modelltest mit Lösung?

GoethéB1 offers a free interactive Modelltest at /app/, no registration, no PDF download, no credit card. Lösungen appear immediately after each question with a plain-language explanation. The Goethe-Institut also publishes official PDF Modellsätze free at goethe.de; using both gives a timed full-run option plus per-question feedback.

What is the pass mark for the Goethe B1 exam?

Each of the four modules is worth 100 points. The pass threshold is 60 out of 100 in every module individually. A strong Lesen score cannot compensate for a Hören score below 60, all four modules must be passed in the same sitting to receive the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. For full exam structure details, see the exam overview.

Is an interactive Modelltest better than a PDF for exam prep?

For most candidates, yes. A PDF Modelltest requires checking a separate answer key after completing an entire section, by then, the reasoning behind each question choice is difficult to recall. An interactive Modelltest shows the Lösung immediately after each question, while the decision is still fresh, which tightens the feedback loop and speeds up error correction. Both formats have value: use the PDF for a fully timed, exam-condition run; use the interactive version for question-level review and daily practice. Try the free interactive Modelltest →
